Five top films of 2021

As 2021 has already come to a close, with it being 2022, here are my top five that have been released in 2021. These films have been released on cinema or Netflix.

West Side story (2021)

I saw west side story on its opening day, and I was interested to see Steven Spielberg to recreate its iconic musical. It was hard to live up to the legendary 1961’s west side story created by directors Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise.

Whilst watching the film, the music, the acting and the costume’s were impressive. The film was like it was filmed in the 1960’s but with modern technology. From the dancing and the choreography, it was amazing.

The film features actors, actresses, dancers and Broadway stars

  • Ansel Elgort

  • Rita Moreno

  • Maddie Ziegler

  • Ariana Debose

This film also features an new actress called Rachel Zegler, who has portrayed the role of Maria in her high school production. She has her own successful YouTube video where she became popular after her cover of in the shallow. She is set to be in the new Shazam and Snow White live action film.

Jamie the musical

I saw this film on amazon prime after becoming a fan in 2018. The film has changed but it kept the spark of what the musical was about, it was about a young 16 year old who wanted to follow his dream of being a drag queen.

There were some songs that were cut out to make space for new songs, which I felt it was better for the film and showed more. The cast and crew did a wonderful job with the acting, camera shots and the editing. We saw a few character’s background, we saw Jamie’s life in depth and we saw Dean, a bully in the musical and film, but we also see his character a little more that he is going through a tough time which is not seen or mentioned in the musical.

Tick Tick Boom

Andrew Garfield portrays the role of Jonathan Larson. Jonathan Larson was the creator of rent, who passed away before it’s performance.

Andrew Garfield’s performance was wonderful, his singing and acting. The casting is filmed with talent like Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens and Alexandra Shipp. It was definitely a perfect cast and they were meant to portray these roles so perfectly.

As a fan of Jonathan Larson, I was impressed with Andrew Garfield’s performance. I didn’t know he could sing and to see him sing songs that were created by a legend like Larson, it felt like Garfield was finally getting recognition other than being reconsidered Spider-Man and Remus Lupin for the marauders. The songs were outstanding, and personally Jonathan Larson would have been proud to know his work was being appreciated and presented with remarkable talent. If you have Netflix, I suggest you watch it but if you have YouTube, watch the soundtrack or the clips, it is the best.

Cruella

Cruella is by far my most favourite film of 2021. I loved Emma Stone’s performance of Cruella as we see her side and her performance and the acting was wonderful and refreshing.

As much as Emma Stone is a wonderful actress, I have to give a thanks to the people involved with the art and design department. The sets and props were amazing, but not only that. I was in love with the fashion. The film shows a lot of fashion and the fact that Vivienne Westwood was an inspiration for Cruella made me really happy, I am a fan of Vivienne Westwood and many other designers.

The film is introduced to Estella, a girl who seems like trouble but is actually good. We meet other characters like Horace and Jasper who turn into a friendship circle turned family. The film uses music to show emotion and it is used well for cinematography. The film is definitely worth watching.

FearStreet trilogy series

This film is available on Netflix!

Fear street is a horror/mystery trilogy film series which became popular on Netflix for a short while. Fear street is a book series created by R. L. stine who also created the Goosebumps series.

The first film, fear street part one: 1994 is about a teenager and her friends who try to take on an evil force that’s been plagued in their town for centuries.

The first film features actors and actresses like,

Benjamin Flores Jr (The Haunted Hathaway's, game shakers)

Kiana Madeira (Trinkets)

Olivia Scott welch (Panic)

Julia Rehwald

Fred Hecinger

Ashley Zuckerman

My opinion on the first film was that I loved the actors and actresses, their acting was great and the plot was overall interesting. I suggest not watching it if you aren’t fans of horror or mysteries as death is involved. After all it’s a horror film.

The second film, fearstreet part two, 1978 is a sequel. The film is a flashback towards the ending to see Ziggy Berman’s experience of the killer in the campsite she was in.

The film is about a killer terrorising camp night wing outside of the cursed town of shady side.

This film features actors and actresses like,

Sadie Sink (stranger things)

Michael Provost (Insatiable)

Emily Rudd

Ted Sutherland (Law and Order)

Chiara Aurelia (cruel summer)

The film with the acting was incredible. This has to be my most favourite film out of the trilogy series. Sadie Sink and Emily Rudd’s acting as siblings were incredible. I suggest not seeing this film if you are not into horror and this film includes mature scenes.

The third film, fearstreet: 1666, is the final film out of the trilogy series. The film begins with a different setting, and the previous actors and actresses of the film series to portray different characters but the siblings to portray siblings.

I’m not a fan of this film but it was amazing to see other people portray other characters.

This film in the beginning shows us more about Sarah Fier, the witch who from the previous films.

After the 1666 flashback, we are brought back to 1994 where we hear more and things revealed.

There was something interesting in the film. The ones who survive in the 1666 setting are the ones who are already dead or killed in the previous films.
